Take a 3-hour leisurely drive to Hat Yai, the Southern Thailand town known for its food variety, local-product market, bazaars, spa and shopping. Visit Municipal Park which is home to several stunning temples, including South Thailand’s tallest Golden Buddha, and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Songkla Province. At Samila Beach, see a golden mermaid statue sitting on a big piles of rocks. Folktale has it that the real mermaid once dropped her golden comb here when a fisherman accidentally scared her away. Stop for lunch, then visit the bustling local-product market. Almost everything is cheap and authentically local. Option to shop at Central Festival mall before returning to Penang.
